3 The Green, Writtle
3 The green is situated in the heart of Writtle village. Suspected to be a meeting place for the Court Leet of the Manor of Writtle, this property has served as a key part of the village history and upholds a prominent position on the green.
Preserving the history of the building has been paramount to us throughout the restoration process. Stripping back the property unveiled a wealth of character and 15th century features that we have worked tirelessly to protect and maintain. With the help of the EHBG, local historians and the team at Essex Oak Frame, this Grade II listed building has been extensively repaired and restored to its former glory; ensuring it retains its unique status in the village for years to come.
This project has been one of our most ambitious to date, but incredibly enjoyable to work on. We are incredibly proud of the final result and believe this demonstrates the high level of work we aim to provide on every build and restoration project. Period Features of the Property
We began work on the Green at the beginning of 2018 for a longstanding client of ours. Our brief was to strip back the property and restore the key features; whilst ensuring it would be fit for modern living.
Initially hidden from view, the original timber framework is now prominent throughout the property. With the help of Essex Oak Frame, we were able to restore and replace those that were no longer structurally sound to ensure this Grade II listed property would remain a vital part of the Writtle Village for years to come. Many of the existing windows and doors remain intact and on display as a result of our extensive restoration work. We were fortunate to uncover a wealth of new features, including 4 fireplaces, during the initial phase of the process; and have worked tirelessly to ensure they are proudly on display.
Combining traditional architecture with modern features has been a challenge we have relished, and one we feel we have executed to the highest standard. For a detailed look at our work, please scroll through the gallery below.
Documenting Our Progress
Documenting our progress has been crucial to our restoration work. When we began, there was very little evidence of the historic value in the property, having been modified to use as a multi-occupancy residence. Unfortunately, much of its character had been bordered up and disused, but thankfully, we were able to preserve a large majority, including window frames and glass panels. These key features have enabled us to retain the unique identify of the property; whilst making it fit for purpose as a modern family home. There has been a significant turnaround for 3 The Green, as you can see from the images below.
Working on the Finer Details
Almost every inch of the property has been renovated and restored; including the garden, the driveway, as well as the brick and mortar. Our attention to detail can be seen throughout the property, but our hard work extends beyond the interior.
Essex Historic Building Group
Working under the guidance of the EHBG has been crucial to the integrity of the project. Ensuring the property retains its unique status in the quant village of Writtle has been a privilege we are proud to have honoured in this restoration. As such a prominent feature of the village, the Essex Historic Building Group requested to study the property and learn more about its origins.
